Why You Can't Slow Down

When you first joined my newsletter, you went through a four-part onboarding sequence.

In the first two emails, I highlight my mission and our shared values. In the third, I ask for your feedback. Thank you for providing it!

As you may know from the 🤝 Halp” section of this newsletter, I am experienced in the Jobs To Be Done (JTBD) research framework.

What is JTBD? In short, it answers one question:

Why do people make the choices they do?

For a typical research project, I interview ten people for one hour each and spend many more hours working with the information to discover the answer to this question.

While survey results are not as thorough as the hour-long interviews of a JTBD project, they still carry insightful information.

Thanks to all of your responses when joining my newsletter, they have provided fascinating insights into our collective troubles in slowing down.

So read on for the three most common problems—and for each, real survey answers from people with that problem and how Slowing The Fuck Down helps you solve it.

Which one(s) resonates with you?

Problem Description: You feel a lack of time available to prioritize slowing down. The overwhelming number of responsibilities you face makes it challenging to slow down.

What it sounds like:

1. “Feeling that there is too much to do and too little time - even stuff I love doing too.”

2. “Lack of time. Work a lot and have 2 very little kids. I carve out 45 min to an hour a day to work out, which is already hard to do, but beyond that it’s hard to get more time.”

3. “I’m a single mom with kids in college. I have to work hard to make money to support my kids, so I’m always keeping my nose to the grindstone.”

4. “The reality of daily responsibilities such as work, home maintenance, social commitments.”

5. “The biggest challenge in slowing down is finding time to prioritize relaxation and self-care over a busy lifestyle.”

6. “Setting aside the time.”

7. “Work.”

8. “General Busyness of Life.”

9. “Remembering to do it.”

Why it’s flawed:

It’s like saying “I’m too busy driving to stop for gas!”

  1. We block off calendar time for you consistently, scheduled months in advance, so you can ensure you have dedicated moments for rest and relaxation amidst your busy schedule.

  2. We provide preparation tools and instructions so you can account for your other priorities, ensuring you feel confident in staying focused on what matters most: you.

  3. We offer live and recorded gatherings, ranging from 60 minutes to 2.5 hours, so you can start with the time you have today and build from there.

Problem Description: You are dealing with internal struggles such as guilt, anxiety, and overthinking that prevent you from relaxing and slowing down.

What it sounds like:

1. “Feeling guilty, lazy and not productive.”

2. “The anxiety that I’ve already fallen behind.”

3. “Thoughts always turn to getting the most out of each day.”

4. “Feeling unsettled and restless, less productive.”

5. “Impatience; when I can sense and differentiate my thoughts, my higher mind, and the One who witnesses both, I know I’m on track.”

6. “Feeling there is so much to do and not enough time guilt.”

7. “Quieting down the voices in my head.”

8. “Overthinking.”

9. “Staying in the moment!”

10. “Brain glitches—it’s sometimes hard to get my brain to work the way I want it to.”

Why it’s flawed:

It’s like saying “I’m too dirty to take a bath!”

  1. We provide a supportive environment full of people who are in the same boat as you and those who were once in the same boat, so you can hear unique insights about what works.

  2. We work with highly experienced guides, so you can get where you want to be.

  3. We understand slowing down is a practice, not an event, and we build our community so you can experience lasting change for the long term.

Problem Description: You have external factors, including work, family responsibilities, and societal expectations, as obstacles to slowing down.

What it sounds like:

1. “The demands made on me by others!”

2. “People.”

3. “My wife won’t let me.”

4. “Pressure to be productive.”

5. “Mental pressure of feeling rushed.”

6. “Everything just seems like I have to go, go, go.”

7. “Seeing the world around me move so fast and feeling expected to. keep up or fear being left behind. Also, analysis paralysis.”

8. “My email inbox growing exponentially.”

9. “The incomings! The guilt!”

Why it’s flawed:

It’s like saying “I’m too busy juggling to put any balls down!”

  1. We block off calendar time for you consistently, scheduled months in advance, so you can ensure you have dedicated moments for rest and relaxation amidst your busy schedule.

  2. We provide a templated email and text you can use to inform the outside world that you’re taking time for self-care, so you can experience slowing down without feeling like you’re letting anyone down.

  3. We offer live and recorded gatherings, ranging from 60 minutes to 2.5 hours, so you can start with the time you have today and build from there.

Wow, we are really on our dental hygiene. How much less than 3 weeks?? I’m in the 1.5-2 month window…usually travel is the catalyst for me to change it.

I’m thinking don’t breathe too close to me, Eric.

Do you put up a fight when she makes you brush at night, Steve?
