I Sponsored A Sports Arena

A way to reach your goal sooner

Every Thursday, I provide simple tips to help you create more pauses — with a generous sprinkling of humor — in 5 minutes or less.

Update: I am experimenting with different features on Beehiiv, the newsletter platform I use to send Doug’s Newsletter.

I created a subscription tier—Buy Doug A Coffee—where you can support my work and hide the pay-per-click sponsors I will be sharing, for $33/year. I’m giving everyone 30 days of this perk as a trial run to see how it goes, after which you can either:

  • Start seeing my sponsors by not pledging $ support

  • Continue hiding my sponsors by pledging $ support

The humorous fake sponsors will remain in both tiers. There is no pressure to ever pledge $ support, and at the same time, I am very grateful for the support.

On to the show!

a word from our fake sponsor…

This newsletter is brought to you by BB Gun Phil’s Debut Album!

Machine Gun Kelly's 2nd nephew once removed, BB Gun Phil, is riding the coattails of his rapper “uncle” to stardom.

Dive into the youthful lyrics of BB Gun Phil, whose fresh tracks copy Machine Gun Kelly’s songs word-for-word. The only difference—which you probably won’t notice—is he replaces curse words because his mom won’t let him say those.

Join us in celebrating the unexpected rise of BB Gun Phil, the almost-relative of a star, who's never actually met Machine Gun Kelly but they were at the same wedding once when he was five years old.

I Sponsored A Sports Arena

Since childhood, I've dreamed of sponsoring a sports arena.

However, I've often wondered why sporting venue advertisements only feature logos of brands trying to sell products.

I understand the logic, but it’s always felt uninspired.

I have similar feelings about institutions named after people. I went to UCLA Anderson School of Management. Every business school is named after whatever random rich dude donated the most money.

If I ever have enough money to build a school, I’d name it after my values—and something funny, because as you likely noticed, humor is one of my values.

The Loving School of Psychedelic and Informal Wear Research

I would study there!

I imagine that vanity decisions—like sponsoring a sports team, donating to a school, or naming a highway, town, or country—are about defining a legacy.

I don’t want my legacy to be my name. I want it to be the values I believe in.

And because one of my values is not collecting so much money that I could sponsor a professional sports arena, last Thursday I decided I would find another route to achieving my lifelong goal.

I made my own arena: DotLove Arena.

If the link above isn’t working, that means Google Maps took down the listing…but I got screenshots!

Goal achieved!

A way to reach your goal sooner

Think of a goal you’ve had that never really felt achievable.

My question for you is—why does it not feel achievable?

What is the true essence of what you actually want to achieve?

And whose standards are you judging success by?

The essence of what I wanted to achieve with my sports arena sponsorship was a fun and creative way to spread the word about my values, not my name.

✔️ Check.

Even when Google Maps inevitably closes DotLove Arena for violating its standards after someone accidentally drives to Douglas, WY, my standards will still be met exceeded.

✔️ Check.

So, I’m achieving my long-held goal with this sponsorship. Thank you for all the congratulations texts pouring in. Yes, it is VERY cool.

If, by some miracle, DotLove Arena still exists as you read this, I encourage you to leave a review for it and share anything:

  • A long-held goal of yours that you can achieve much sooner than you thought.

  • A review of Doug’s Newsletter.

  • An opinion about the arena’s nachos. They’re just okay…

📊 Community Poll

Results for last week’s question: You wake up and open your fridge for breakfast, remembering you saved pizza from last night. Which do you do?

I’m going cold, too. Every once in a while a little heat. It can never regain that original hotness…

On to this week’s question!

Whilst on long drives, when you see the same car a few times over the course of the drive, do you catch feelings?

i.e. do you "like" or "dislike" the other car/driver?

How you can help me:

I am seeking connections with owners/managers of third places you love, such as coffee shops and yoga studios, to share information about my Celebrations with their customers.

I have an exciting program set up to share revenue with them! And I’m not sure how much foot traffic DotLove Arena will be receiving.

If you know someone, please respond to this email to help me connect 🙏
